Consider this: The program <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/news\/press\/releases\/2023\/03\/02\/tsa-precheckr-sets-new-active-membership-record\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hit 15 million active members<\/a> in March 2023. SEAN CUDAHY\/THE POINTS GUY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And TSA leaders are happy about it.<\/p>\n<p>While the program is a convenient, time-saving option for travelers, the TSA appreciates it equally; a growing pool of prescreened travelers helps the agency operate its checkpoints more efficiently.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;TSA PreCheck continues to be one of our most innovative risk-based security solutions, providing the benefit of shorter wait times under 10 minutes, greater checkpoint efficiency and improved security,&#8221; TSA Administrator David Pekoske said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/news\/press\/releases\/2024\/08\/08\/tsa-precheckr-reaches-milestone-20-million-members\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a statement<\/a> Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"what-is-tsa-pre-check\" class=\"jsx-2362441780 anchor\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"jsx-2362441780\">What is TSA PreCheck?<\/h2>\n<p>Launched in 2013, TSA PreCheck allows vetted members who have paid the enrollment fee access to dedicated, shorter lines at checkpoints. Cleared members don&#8217;t have to remove their shoes or small-container liquids from carry-on bags before sending belongings through the scanner.<\/p>\n<p>For new members, the application fee for a five-year membership is $78. This includes <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/guide\/things-to-know-global-entry\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Global Entry<\/a>, members of which also get access to the PreCheck lanes.<\/p>\n<p>That membership tally quadrupled since early 2022, when the DHS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/national-media-release\/cbp-surpasses-10-million-ttp-members#:~:text=WASHINGTON%20%E2%80%93%20U.S.%20Customs%20and%20Border,ever%20received%20in%20one%20year.\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> it had reached <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/news\/global-entry-ten-million-members\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">10 million trusted travelers<\/a>. The latter has opened dozens of enrollment locations across the country, notably at Office Depot and OfficeMax stores.<\/p>\n<p>The TSA says around 90% of PreCheck applicants have just three- to five-day processing times.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"tsa-pre-check-vs-global-entry\" class=\"jsx-2362441780 anchor\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"jsx-2362441780\">TSA PreCheck vs. Global Entry<\/h2>\n<p>TSA PreCheck is cheaper than Global Entry, at $78 for first-time applicants for a five-year membership. Global Entry currently costs $100 for five years, and the fee will <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/news\/global-entry-fee-increase\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">jump to $120 in October<\/a>.
